The trees that most frequently have to be removed are " Salix fragilis " ( crack willow ), a fast-growing, short-lived member of the willow family.
The'Dibble Tree', a magnificent specimen of Crack Willow ( Salix fragilis ) can still be seen, off Ferrier Street, and was listed as one of the hundred Treefest Heritage Trees of Scotland in 2006.
The only reported difference between the two is that " S . matsudana " has two nectaries in each female flower, whereas " S . babylonica " has only one; however this character is variable in many willows ( e . g . crack willow " Salix fragilis " can have either one or two ), so even this difference may not be a meaningful species distinction.
About one-quarter of the site is occupied by willow carr, dominated by crack willow, " Salix fragilis ", beneath which the field layer contains a mix of tall fen and woodland plants, the latter including wood avens, " Geum rivale ", male fern, " Dryopteris filix-mas ", and, at the edge of the carr, globe flower, " Trollius europaeus ".
I checked to see if the species name is still in use, and found that the " species " named seems to be considered a subspecies of " Salix fragilis ", which apparently is fairly common along rivers in the UK . Unless some more solid current information can be obtained on geology or plant life, I think that " Geology " and " Flora " should be eliminated as topics, but the gold prospecting activity should be discussed under the subtitle " Gold prospect .
